چکیده

Determination of global fallout Tc in Japanese paddy field soil sample was carried out using a simple and rapid separation method by using a TEVA resin and determination by ICP-MS. The ranges of Tc concentrations are 6 110 mBq kg dry. The Tc values obtained were usually higher than the expected value of 6 mBq kg dry which was estimated from uniform Tc distribution on the surface of the northern hemisphere. To explain the fate of Tc in the paddy field environment, Cs was used as an indicator. The activity ratios of Tc/Cs are (2.0 5.2) x 10. Since the activity ratio can be calculated theoretically from fission as 1.4 x 10 at nuclear weapons’ detonations, the ratio is now estimated to be about 3.0 x 10 with correction of decay out. The measured ratios were one order of magnitude higher than the theoretical one from fission. The results of this study, at least, suggest that more Tc might be fixed on the soil than we expected before.

Technetium-99 Behavior in the Terrestrial Environment Field Observations and Radiotracer Experiments

Obtaining data on 99Tc in the rice paddy field environment is important because Tc is a redox sensitive element. The behavior of Tc is expected to be different under upland field and rice paddy field conditions since the redox conditions in the soil environment differ. However, most of the data on the nuclide behavior in soil were obtained under upland field conditions. To understand the global...

Tc in Paddy Soils Contaminated in Two Different Ways

Rice is one of the most important food crops in the world. All isotopes of technetium (Tc) are radioactive, and the environmentally most important one is 99 Tc because of its very long half-life (2.1x10 5 years) and relatively high 235 U-fission yield [1,2]. Accordingly, it is one of the critical radionuclides in an environmental impact assessment for radioactive waste disposal. A significant a...

Insolubilization of Technetium by Indigenous Bacteria in Water Covering Paddy Soils

Microbially mediated insoluble technetium (Tc) formation was studied using surface water covering paddy fields. Surface water samples were collected from three kinds of flooded paddy soils: andosol, gley soil, and gray lowland soil. Insoluble Tc (> 0.2 μm in size) was formed in all surface water samples and the amounts ranged from 48.7 ± 2.2% of total Tc (gley soil) to 88.5 ± 3.1% (gray lowland...

Fallout Technetium - 99 Distribution and Behavior in Japanese Soils

Environmental amounts of Tc have been accumulating because of its long half-life of 2.1 × 10 y. This pure β-emitter (Emax= 0.29 MeV) is produced in the fission of U or Pu with a relatively high fission yield of ca. 6%, and it has been released to the environment through nuclear weapons tests and nuclear industries. The quantity of Tc produced by atmospheric nuclear weapon explosions was estimat...

Comparison of pedogenic properties of some paddy and nonpaddy soils of southern Iran

ABSTRACT- Paddy soils make up the largest anthropogenic wetlands on earth. Present study was performed to investigate and compare soil formation of paddy soils with long-term rice cultivation history with non-paddy soils and study the effect of waterlogging on soil pedogenesis. Soil samples were taken from paddy and non-paddy soils derived from the same calcareous parent materials. Some pedogen...
